Inspired by the introduction of Bethanie’s Room in February and the work committed by the staff members and volunteers, Dafna has created a small-scale model of the beds at the shelter. While she knows from multiple visits volunteering that the beds are made with clean white sheets and pillowcases, this work is about the individuals that come to sleep. Its creation is meant to describe the welcoming of women, including the acceptance of gender expansive individuals and recognizing their differences. This is something the staff do instinctively and she wanted to honor them as well as the individuals. Each bed in this model of Bethanie’s Room is unique, just like each person who enters the space. Some have two pillows, one pillow fell on the floor, some have an extra blanket. Most materials were sourced from Scrap in SE Portland.
About the Artist
From a young age Dafna took interest in creating art and art history. She pursued art at the University of Wisconsin and later became a registered nurse. With a focus on mental health, Dafna never abandoned her love of art and has combined nursing care with elements of art therapy. Dafna’s personal work is described as intermedia and includes mediums such as; paint, fabric, electronics, found objects, and wood. Through her work, she touches on topics of community, freedom, individuality, and relationships.
