John was born in New York but eventually moved to San Francisco and attended California College of Arts where he earned his BFA in 1981. He met his wife Laura while working on his first mural at the state psychiatric hospital in Napa. John and Laura married and moved to San Diego where they started their partnership business, SitePainters. Together, they produced commissioned art for both commercial and residential clients. They also taught art at Public Schools in the San Diego area before welcoming their daughter in 1990 and moving to Portland in 1993. They continued to develop their business with a series of publicly funded Percent for Art installations. In 2011, John was diagnosed with Parkinsons which progressed to the stage where it forced his retirement and sadly, he passed away in 2023.

His wife Laura submitted his piece, Antler and Fruit, for On the Ledge this year. This piece features the fruits of the earth. Many of his paintings often included homegrown subjects and he greatly appreciated fruits and vegetables from the garden. John found their shapes and colors intriguing and worthy of praise in a painting, along with other items found on walks through the woods, such as the antler and colorful leaf.
